Trump is now demonstrating that “The Art of the Deal” that he always has in mind involves no “artistry.” For, diplomacy is a kind of artistry and he dabbled with it for a moment and then ran into a childish willfulness just as stubborn as his—the Republican caucus. Now he is calling their bluff this morning, “Push Obamacare repeal through today or I’m going to just let it stay in place.” One alternative he had at his disposal was, “…or I’ll hold my breath til I die!” Still, the best alternative would be to threaten to use a hypothetical threat he made in the campaign last year and state, “…or I’ll take one of you out in the street and shoot you and all of you will see that my support will not drop.”
Trump did not happen without a context. His context is the Republican base and the Republican Congresspersons who are being frightened into submission by someone they know is mentally unstable. But they are trapped by their own choices, they are being “hoisted on their own petard.” If Trump loses in his effort to push this bill through the House, his ability to effectively serve as President is going to be even further in jeopardy. I strongly suspect that the bill will pass today, as the GOP is so emotionally immature that it cannot see beyond its own voracious appetite for power and will “hold their breath, close their eyes, cross their fingers” and vote for the bill just to prop up their extremely lame President and party. When you fraternize with madness and even embody it as your leader, contamination is inevitable.
